Khitam, a 54-year-old woman from Syria, lives in one of the biggest refugee settlements in Lebanon, together with more than 1,500 refugees. She is one of seven refugee women cooking meals that are distributed to the refugees living in the settlement. "I work to support myself. My situation is dire and I don’t have anyone else who can provide for me," says Khitam. Thanks to the generosity of our private sponsors, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) was able to provide funding to a local Lebanese organisation, Union of Relief and Development Associations (URDA), that set up a kitchen in a refugee settlement in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon. URDA employs refugees to cook the food and distribute the meals to thousands of refugees living in tented settlements. Fled from Syria six years ago Six years ago, Khitam fled from Homs in Syria to Lebanon with her husband and children. Her husband died three years later, leaving her alone. "My children have families and are barely able to feed their own children. I could never ask them to provide for me as well," she says. She is happy to be a part of the cooking group in the camp. "Cooking food for other refugees makes me happy and the salary makes me able to support myself. It’s heavy work – we do everything from cutting chicken and boiling rice, to cleaning and preparing food boxes for over 1,000 people." Over 1,500 meals for 300 refugee families In March 2019, NRC supported the preparation of over 1,500 meals for 300 refugee families, the majority of whom were evacuated from their homes after the winter storms. Some of them have still not been able to return to their homes as their tents are being rehabilitated. Khitam and the other women receive a lot of positive feedback from people saying they’re enjoying their food. Through the cooking, the women come together and are able to keep their mind off their current lives as refugees. "Knowing I contribute to put food on the table for other refugee families and to feed their children makes it worth all the hard efforts I put into my cooking,” says Khitam. Libanon: Khitam lagar mat till tusentals flyktingar

"Att veta att jag bidrar till att ge andra flyktingar mat på bordet och också säkerställer att barnen får mat, gör det värt att lägga ner mycket arbete på matlagningen”, säger syriska Khitam. Tillsammans med NRC ser hon till att 300 familjer, som drabbats av vinterstormarna i Libanon, får mat.

Khitam är en 54-årig kvinna från Syrien som bor i en av de största flyktingbosättningarna i Libanon, tillsammans med mer än 1 500 andra flyktingar. Hon och sju andra kvinnor lagar mat, som delas ut till flyktingarna i området.

Den här vintern har varit en av de svåraste för tusentals syriska flyktingar i Libanon. Stormarna "Norma" och "Miriam" orsakade skador på infrastruktur, vägar och bostäder över hela landet, och minst 70 000 flyktingar drabbades. Många blev tvungna att evakueras till andra områden, eftersom tälten de bodde i kollapsade på grund av översvämningar.

– Jag arbetar för att försörja mig själv. Jag befinner mig i en svår situation och har ingen annan som kan försörja mig, säger Khitam.

Tack vare generöst stöd från våra privata givare, kan NRC ge ekonomiskt stöd till den lokala libanesiska organisationen Union of Relief and Development Associations (URDA), som har etablerat ett kök i en flyktingbosättning i Bekaadalen i östra Libanon. URDA anlitar flyktingar för att laga och dela ut mat till tusentals flyktingar som bor i tält i bosättningen.

This winter proved to be one of the toughest for thousands of displaced Syrians in Lebanon. Storm "Norma" and “Miriam” caused damages to infrastructure, roads and homes across the country, putting at least 70,000 refugees at risk. Many had to evacuate to alternative locations as their tents collapsed because of the flooding. Flydde från Syrien för sex år sedan

För sex år sedan flydde Khitam tillsammans med mannen och barnen, från Homs i Syrien till Libanon. Mannen dog tre år senare och hon blev ensam kvar.

– Mina barn har sina egna familjer och kan knappt ge mat till sina barn. Jag kan inte be dem att försörja mig också, säger hon.

Hon trivs med att vara en del av matlagningsgruppen i lägret.

– Jag blir glad av att laga mat till andra flyktingar, och lönen innebär att jag kan försörja mig själv. Det är ett tungt arbete, och vi gör allt från att skära upp kyckling och koka ris, till att städa och göra matkassar till över 1 000 personer.

Khitam och de andra kvinnorna får mycket positiv feedback från människor som säger att de tycker om maten de lagar.

Genom matlagningen får kvinnor en gemenskap, där de har möjlighet att skingra tankarna och glömma flyktingboendets utmaningar för en stund.

Through a rotating schedule with many other women from the settlement, several of refugee women including Khitam were selected to be part of the final group that prepares and cook meals when needed. “Cooking food for other refugees makes me happy and the salary is vital for me to support myself.
